For the final project I teamed up with Ruben Sikkes and Joris Nijman. Together we came up with the idea of creating a serious game around the exploration of our solar system, which we dubbed Space Discovery. Certain concepts of physics can be learned through exploring our solar system, while the knowledge of the planets in general can also be gained. Furthermore, the narrative follows the style of a post-apocalyptic world, which is a popular tv, movie and video games trope.
To implement our game we decided not to use Ximpel, but we went with the Ren’Py Visual Novel Engine instead. Ren’Py is a widely used visual novel engine that helps you use words, images, and sounds to tell interactive stories that run on computers and mobile devices. These can be both visual novels and life simulation games. The easy to learn script language allows anyone to efficiently write large visual novels, while its Python scripting is enough for complex simulation games. Ren’Py is open source and free for commercial use.
The progress of the project will happen in three different stages:
- The conceptual phase
- The prototype/proof of concept & early demo
- The publication of the final version
Documentation on these stages can be found via the drop down menu of the final project on the main menu bar.
